Founder

Emily Lerer, Founder and tutor, was a teacher for 8 years in New York City. She received her BA from Syracuse University and MA in both Early Childhood and Childhood Education from Bank Street College.

How it began

While teaching in both private and public school settings throughout Manhattan, Emily witnessed how children living mere city blocks away from one another were experiencing immensely different educational conditions. Every school in the New York City public school system is measured by the same standards, however, the degree of resources and support each school receives varies wildly, and almost always to the detriment of the struggling students in the lower income schools.

Project Tutor was launched, because Emily saw an opportunity to help children across the social stratum.
